Let's turn your house into a home

Back Bay is home to some of Boston's most admired residences, from elegant Commonwealth Avenue brownstones to sophisticated condominiums overlooking the Charles River. These homes deserve thoughtful interior design that respects their architectural heritage while making everyday life more comfortable, functional, and beautiful.

Herringbone & Brass provides full-service luxury interior design for homeowners throughout Back Bay from our nearby Brookline studio. We recently completed a comprehensive renovation of a Back Bay residence that involved reconfiguring the home's layout, designing a new kitchen, creating a more private family room, and furnishing every major living space from furniture and rugs to drapery, wallpaper, and accessories.

Whether your home sits near Copley Square, Marlborough Street, Beacon Street, or the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, our approach remains the same. We create timeless interiors that feel deeply personal while helping protect the long-term value of one of Boston's most prestigious real estate investments.

Back Bay homes offer extraordinary character, but they also present unique design opportunities that require careful planning.
Many residences feature beautiful original moldings, fireplaces, walnut flooring, oversized windows, and generous proportions that deserve preservation. At the same time, homeowners often want kitchens that function better, family spaces that feel more connected, and interiors that reflect how they actually live today.
Our role is to bridge those two goals.
Rather than treating architecture and functionality as competing priorities, we design homes where each strengthens the other.
That often includes:
Reimagining floor plans without sacrificing architectural integrity.
Improving circulation between entertaining spaces.
Maximizing natural light throughout older layouts.
Creating cohesive interiors from room to room.
Selecting finishes appropriate for historic luxury homes.
Integrating custom millwork where additional storage or functionality is needed.
Every decision considers both the beauty of the finished home and its long-term value.

Thoughtful Interior Design for Back Bay's Historic Homes

One of our recent projects involved a comprehensive renovation of a handsome Back Bay residence.

The renovation completely reconfigured the floor plan to create a newly designed kitchen while establishing a more private family room at the rear of the home. We also completed the home's interior decoration, carefully selecting and procuring furniture, rugs, drapery, wallpaper, lighting, and accessories that brought every space together.
One of the home's defining spaces became the great room.

Designed for both entertaining and everyday living, the room was organized into multiple functional areas, including a formal dining room, a living room, a reading nook, and a window seating area. A traditional marble fireplace anchors the space while contemporary artwork introduces a fresh contrast between classic architecture and modern living.

A custom-cut rug was designed specifically for the room, preserving the original walnut inlay flooring while visually connecting the different seating areas into one cohesive environment.

The renovation was completed in close collaboration with Sleeping Dog Properties over approximately one year, demonstrating the level of coordination required for complex luxury renovations in historic Boston homes.

CONCIERGE-LEVEL PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Busy professionals rarely have time to coordinate contractors, deliveries, purchasing, and installations. We manage the entire process so clients can focus on their lives while the project progresses.

A TIMELESS MODERN APPROACH

We believe every client deserves a home that reflects their own personality rather than a designer's signature style.
Our philosophy combines timeless New England architecture with carefully considered contemporary elements that remain relevant for years to come.

DEEP RELATIONSHIPS THROUGHOUT GREATER BOSTON

Years of working across Boston have allowed us to build relationships with exceptional contractors, builders, artisans, cabinetmakers, and specialty trades who understand the expectations of luxury historic homes.

Many Back Bay homes benefit from renovations that improve how the home functions while preserving the architectural details that make the neighborhood so distinctive. We work alongside architects, contractors, and specialty trades throughout the renovation to help maintain one cohesive design vision from beginning to end.

Luxury Home Renovation Design

Beautiful architecture deserves equally thoughtful interiors. We source furniture, rugs, lighting, artwork, window treatments, accessories, and custom pieces that create a home that feels complete rather than collected over time.

Interior Decoration and Furnishings

Living in Back Bay means enjoying one of Boston's most vibrant neighborhoods.

Morning walks along the Charles River Esplanade, shopping on Newbury Street, evenings around Copley Square, and entertaining friends during the Boston Marathon or the Head of the Charles Regatta all shape how homeowners use their homes.

Those experiences influence our design decisions.

Spaces designed for entertaining become especially valuable during marathon weekend. Comfortable guest accommodations matter when family visits for neighborhood events.

Flexible living areas make hosting effortless throughout every season, whether overlooking Commonwealth Avenue's fall foliage or gathering after a day exploring The Shops at Prudential Center.

Rather than designing rooms in isolation, we design homes around the lifestyle Back Bay homeowners actually enjoy.

Designing for the Way Back Bay Lives

On installation day, our team delivers, places, and styles every piece, from all the furniture down to the final pillow, so your home feels finished from the moment you walk in.
