In just a few years, the home office has gone from an occasional convenience to a fixture of daily life. As remote and hybrid work have reshaped how—and where—we spend our days, a once-overlooked corner of the house has become a room we genuinely live in. With that shift comes a design challenge we hear about constantly: how do you create a custom home office that performs as a true workspace without sacrificing the look and feel of the rest of your home?

Too often, the result tips in one of two directions. It leans corporate, landing on a sterile “office” look that feels imported from a cubicle. Or it overcorrects toward the decorative, becoming a beautiful room that no longer functions as a place to actually get work done.

For this project, our Principal Designer, Virginia, set out to resolve exactly that tension. Her answer was a custom standing desk that anchors the entire room and balances real performance with a fully integrated, design-driven approach. Every surrounding material and tone was chosen to complement the desk, layering in warmth and depth.

Function First: A True Sit-to-Stand Desk

As with any project, we started with how the space needed to work. The goal was a genuine sit-to-stand desk that could support full days of use without compromising on comfort or function.

The desk was built on an iMovR base, wrapped in rift-cut white oak that transforms a purely functional mechanism into a seamless architectural statement. By enclosing the base, we softened its mechanical elements and allowed the desk to read as a built-in part of the room. The legs feature three butterfly joinery details, painted the same rich tone as the walls for a cohesive, intentional look, reinforcing the connection between the furniture and the architecture.

Materiality and Detail: Craftsmanship in Every Surface

The desktop showcases a pebbled vinyl inlay surface, accented with additional butterfly joinery details that mirror the detailing on the base and add subtle craftsmanship to the tabletop. The combination of materials introduces durability and texture, while maintaining a clean, refined appearance that supports daily use without sacrificing design.

The end result is a truly one-of-a-kind standing desk—a thoughtful blend of performance, materiality, and design that cannot be bought off the shelf. It serves not only as a functional workspace, but as a centerpiece that brings the whole room together, proving that functional furniture can also be personal and beautiful.

The Finishing Touches

The rest of the room was designed to evoke a moody, feminine vibe. We anchored the palette with a stunning art piece in deep purples and berry tones. From there, we selected fabrics for the swivel chair and window treatments. We chose a bold, patterned wallpaper for the ceiling and a whimsical chandelier. The result: an inviting home office full of functionality and personality.
