One of the very first conversations we have with every client is about budget. Before any sourcing begins or design concepts are developed, we take the time to fully understand the scope of the project, how the client wants to live in the space, and what level of investment feels most comfortable for them.
While budget conversations are not always the most exciting part of the design process, they are undoubtedly one of the most important. Transparency early on creates a strong foundation for the project and allows the design process to move forward with clarity and confidence. Establishing a budget from the start allows the design process to move forward without any surprises later on.
Every project is unique, and so is every client’s approach to investing in their home. Some clients want to focus their investment on custom millwork, statement lighting, or high quality furnishings that serve as focal points within a space. Others may prefer a more balanced approach throughout the home. Having these conversations early on allows us to tailor the design process to fit the needs of each client individually.
Once we have a clear understanding of the project scope, we create a detailed budgeting spreadsheet that serves as a roadmap for the project. This document outlines anticipated investments across all major categories and provides both high and low budget ranges, offering transparency from the very start.
The spreadsheet is organized into categories such as furnishings, lighting, rugs, window treatment, accessories, and other design elements allowing the client to see where allocations are being made across the project.
Providing budget ranges also allows for flexibility. Some clients may choose to invest more heavily in certain pieces while scaling back in others. A custom sofa, for example, may be paired with more modest accent furnishings, or savings in one category may create opportunities to invest in a statement light fixture or bespoke millwork elsewhere. The budget becomes a tool that guides decision-making rather than a limitation on creativity.
Below is an example of a budgeting spreadsheet, depicting high and low prices which we proposed to a client. Ultimately, they selected a middle-tier budget, which we were able to achieve through thoughtful sourcing and strategic allocation of resources. By understanding priorities from the outset, we were able to create a design that aligned with both their aesthetic goals and financial comfort level.

Once the budget is established, we begin the sourcing process. The budget is accountable for more than just the furnishings themselves. We also include estimates for shipping, taxes, receiving, inspecting and any other project related costs. This way the clients have a realistic understanding of the total investment from the beginning.
Including these expenses from the beginning provides clients with a more realistic understanding of the total project investment. Rather than encountering unexpected costs along the way, clients are able to make informed decisions with a comprehensive view of the project as a whole.
This level of transparency not only creates a smoother process, but also allows clients to feel more confident and comfortable throughout the process. With a clear budget framework in place, the focus can remain on the creative aspects of the project rather than financial uncertainty.
Thoughtful design is about more than selecting beautiful finishes and furnishings. It is about creating a process that feels organized, collaborative, and enjoyable from start to finish. Clear budgeting allows us to design with intention, allocate resources strategically, and ultimately deliver spaces that feel both beautiful and attainable for each individual client.
